Building a new bathroom in a house in Chifley

The owner of this home wanted to build a new bathroom in their house in Chifley in Sydney. The old bathroom had very dated styling with a dull grey look and a strange layout with the vanity mirror on the wall but the vanity under the window.

They hated using the old combination bath and shower which was right next to the toilet and very cramped. They wanted to demolish everything in the room and strip it back to the bare walls and flooring so that the layout could be changed to make it a more functional bathroom.

It is very easy to renovate a bathroom in ahome in Sydney, our renovation company does it all the time. Our experienced tradespeople know how to work in small spaces as well as manage getting materials in and out of nearly any type of property.

To achieve the layout change we had to core hole through the slab into their dining room below so that the new drainage pipework plumbing could be installed. Once that was done we had to then repair the ceiling and re-plaster it. We also supplied and installed a new window as well, this required cutting some of the brickwork so that it could fit above the new walk in shower that had to be built.

Floor plan idea for an old bathroom in Chifley

Passion Built‘s renovation scope of work included the demolition of the old bathroom in Chifley before we did any of the construction work. We stripped everything to get back to the bare brick walls and concrete floor. This enables us to get access to the plumbing in the walls and the drainage in the floor to make the required changes to the piping.

For this bathroom the floor plan idea was to basically ‘flip’ the room so the toilet, shower and vanity were on opposite sides to their original placement. This could be done by making adjustments to the plumbing. Coming up with new floor plan ideas for small bathrooms is really easy, there could have been another three or four variations to this, it just depends on the renovation budget that you have as to how much can be done.

We make this process really easy by doing the following steps;

  1. Planning and designing: Before starting any construction work, we will help you plan and design your bathroom renovation project. This includes deciding on the layout, selecting materials, and determining the budget required for the scope of work. You can consult with an interior designer to create a set of plans that we can work from or you can do it yourself with our help. Having a very clear plan is super critical.

  2. Demolition: Once a design, budget and layout has been agreed to & all the relevant approvals are in place we can begin to demolish the existing bathroom. This involves removing all the old fixtures, fittings, and finishes. We take great care to avoid damaging any structural elements of the building while we do this. Sometimes we might discover floor or wall damage that may need to be repaired.

  3. Plumbing and electrical work: After demolition, the next step is to install any new plumbing and electrical wiring. This may involve repositioning existing pipes and wiring or installing new ones. It’s important to only use licensed professionals to carry out this type of work to ensure that it meets building codes and safety standards. Using a handyman is not advised as they may not be licensed.

  4. Wall and floor finishes: With the plumbing and electrical work complete, the next step is to install wall and floor finishes. This may include waterproofing, tiling, painting, and plastering. It’s important to choose materials that are waterproof and easy to maintain.

  5. Cabinetry and fixtures: Once the walls and floors are finished, the next step is to install cabinetry, such as vanities and storage units, and fixtures, such as taps, shower heads, toilet, bath or shower. A licensed plumber has to connect the fixtures to the plumbing system.

  6. Final touches: The final step in the construction process is to add finishing touches, such as lighting, mirrors, and accessories. These elements help to complete the look of the bathroom and make it a functional and enjoyable space.

Changing the plumbing in a unit bathroom in Chifley

A lot of people think it is too hard to change the layout of their bathroom but it is actually quite easy. If you are just doing a simple makeover or a remodel then you are probably leaving everything where it is and just changing taps, new paint, new lighting and maybe a new vanity. It is a simple way to freshen up an old bathroom.

Although when you choose to do a bathroom renovation in Chifley you are starting with a blank sheet of paper and can then design anything you like. By completely demolishing your old bathroom you can get access to all the plumbing to be able to move pipes, tap locations, drain locations etc.

This means you can completely change the orientation and layout of your bathroom and install a toilet in a different corner of the room, have a larger vanity or even install a bath together with a shower. However, there are several things that you should consider before doing so:

  • Cost: Changing the plumbing in your bathroom can be expensive, particularly if you need to move the location of your fixtures or change the layout of your pipes. You will need to budget accordingly and ensure that you have enough funds to cover the cost of the plumbing changes as well as the other aspects of your renovation. We can provide a quotation that outlines what it might cost and this will depend if the house is built on a concrete slab or timber floor boards as well as how extensive the changes are.
  • Building codes and regulations: It is important to ensure that any changes you make to your bathroom plumbing comply with local building codes and regulations. You may need to obtain permits and have the work inspected by a licensed plumber or building inspector. This is particularly important for bathrooms getting renovated in units or apartments where you have to use existing plumbing that is shared in the building.
  • Access to pipes: Depending on the age and design of your home, accessing the plumbing pipes in your bathroom may require additional work such as cutting through walls or floors. You will need to factor this into your renovation timeline and budget.
  • Plumbing fixtures: If you plan to change the location of your plumbing fixtures such as your toilet, sink, or shower, you will need to ensure that the new locations are feasible and that there is adequate space to install them or more importantly, use them easily in their new placements.
  • Timeline: Changing the plumbing in your bathroom can add time to your renovation project. You will need to factor in the additional time required for plumbing work when planning your renovation timeline.

Bathroom renovating ideas

Back to wall toilet cisstern

The design of this new toilet sits flush to the wall and doesn’t have any contoured shapes around the sides like most toilets do. The smooth outer surface makes it much easier to clean and it won’t collect dust or debris around the base compared to a toilet that has the floor waste piping exposed.

Subway wall tiles

In small bathrooms you don’t have a lot of space to make a visual impact, so you need to be clever with your interior design choices. Using subway wall tiles to create a feature wall creates interest in the room without making it feel cluttered. It is a unique look and doesn’t take over the room while also creating a feature wall.

Shower wall niche

Building a wall niche in the shower area means you have a shelf to store all your toiletries and don’t need to use any plastic hanging racks or other ugly devices. It is easy to clean and creates lots of extra space.

Changing bathroom plumbing drainage

When you strip a bathroom back to the wall and floor boards you can then make changes to where the pipes run, this means you can move the installation placement of the newly installed items to create a different bathroom layout.

Custom made glass screen divider

A modern bathroom design trend for houses or units is to have a single glass piece that is the shower screen. Commonly used for walk in showers it means you can have a seamless transition from the main room area into the shower. It is great for adults, kids or even pets to simply walk in or out of the shower.

Renovating a bathroom in Chifley can definitely add value to your home, as long as the renovations are done properly and with the right materials. When considering a bathroom renovation, it’s important to ensure that you have all the necessary elements to make the space functional, including a shower, toilet, vanity and bathtub.

  • A shower is a must-have for most people, as it provides a convenient and efficient way to get clean. Make sure to choose a shower that is large enough for two people and has enough headroom, if needed.
  •  Toilets are also important (no kidding right) and you should consider a model that is efficient, easy to clean and has a low profile to make the most of the space if there isn’t much room. Sometimes a concealed cistern system is a wise choice.
  • Vanity units are essential for storing bathroom essentials and can be used to add extra counter space, too. Choose a vanity that matches the style of the bathroom and has enough storage space.
  • Bathtubs can also add value to your home, especially if you have a larger family or enjoy relaxing in a warm bath. While they can take up a lot of space they are especially suited if the home needs to be used by a family with small children or it is placed in an ensuite to the main bedroom.

When renovating your custom bathroom, it is important to choose high-quality materials that are durable and attractive. This includes tiles, taps, shower heads and other fixtures. We always recommend a fresh coat of paint to give the space a new look and feel.

Additionally, consider incorporating energy-efficient and eco-friendly features into your bathroom renovation, such as low-flow toilets, shower heads and taps which can help reduce water and energy usage. These features not only help the environment, but can also lower your monthly bills.

In terms of cost, bathroom renovations can range from a few thousand dollars for a basic renovation to tens of thousands for a complete overhaul. It is important to have a budget in mind and stick to it, so you don’t overspend. Renovating a bathroom in Chifley to include a shower, toilet, vanity and bathtub can add value to your home, as long as the renovations are done properly and with the right materials.
