Small bathroom renovation in Coogee

Before After Renovating an old bathroom in CoogeeSmall bathroom renovation Coogee with terrazzo look floor tiles

Building a new small bathroom in a unit in coogee

The owner of this home wanted a new small bathroom built in their unit in Coogee in Sydney. The old bathroom had very dated styling with white floor and wall tiling, a combination bath & shower together with an old vanity. They wanted to demolish everything in the room and strip it back to the bare walls and flooring.

It is very easy to renovate a bathroom in a unit or apartment in Sydney, our renovation company does it all the time. Our experienced tradespeople know how to work in small spaces as well as manage getting materials in and out of narrow stairways, lifts without annoying the neighbours in other units.

The design of this new bathroom was focussed on creating more space with a more modern look. The owners wanted to remove the old combined bath tub and shower to just have a large walk in shower. This meant we had to relocate the old bath drain to accomodate the new walk in shower installation.

Our team is made up of bathroom renovators, plumbers and an electrician so we are able to change the layout of a bathroom to move drains, taps, lighting, switches or even windows.  We can help you plan all of these steps during our bathroom design consultation process so that you can build a 100% custom made bathroom to suit your needs. We can help you construct practically anything you like. It means you can create an incredible design that takes ideas from architects, designer homes or the latest renovation trends.

Demolishing an old bathroom in Coogee

Passion Built‘s renovation scope of work included the demolition of the old bathroom in Coogee before we did any other construction work. We stripped everything to get back to the bare brick walls and concrete floor. This enables us to get access to the plumbing in the walls and the drainage in the floor to make the required changes to the drainage.

The existing window was going to remain in place and no other changes were being made to the walls so the size of the room would remain the same. In some old homes in Coogee the bathroom backs onto the laundry, so it may be possible to remove the wall and build a combined bathroom & laundry to create more usable space.

Once the plumbing adjustments were made we could then prepare the walls and floors to be tiled once the new waterproofing and screed was laid & cured. This is all part of our renovation service, we literally help you manage everything from start to finish

  1. Planning and designing: Before starting any construction work, we will help you plan and design your bathroom renovation project. This includes deciding on the layout, selecting materials, and determining the budget required for the scope of work. You can consult with an interior designer to create a set of plans that we can work from or you can do it yourself with our help. Having a very clear plan is super critical.

  2. Obtaining permits: Depending on the scope of the renovation work, you may need to obtain building permits from your local council or the building strata. These permits ensure that your project meets building standards and regulations, especially when you are renovating in a unit or apartment block in Sydney. If the renovations are purely internal & mainly cosmetic then you may not need them.

  3. Demolition: Once a design, budget and layout has been agreed to & all the relevant approvals are in place we can begin to demolish the existing bathroom. This involves removing all the old fixtures, fittings, and finishes. We take great care to avoid damaging any structural elements of the building while we do this. Sometimes we might discover floor or wall damage that may need to be repaired.

  4. Plumbing and electrical work: After demolition, the next step is to install any new plumbing and electrical wiring. This may involve repositioning existing pipes and wiring or installing new ones. It’s important to only use licensed professionals to carry out this type of work to ensure that it meets building codes and safety standards. Using a handyman is not advised as they may not be licensed.

  5. Wall and floor finishes: With the plumbing and electrical work complete, the next step is to install wall and floor finishes. This may include waterproofing, tiling, painting, and plastering. It’s important to choose materials that are waterproof and easy to maintain.

  6. Cabinetry and fixtures: Once the walls and floors are finished, the next step is to install cabinetry, such as vanities and storage units, and fixtures, such as taps, shower heads, toilet, bath or shower. A licensed plumber has to connect the fixtures to the plumbing system.

  7. Final touches: The final step in the construction process is to add finishing touches, such as lighting, mirrors, and accessories. These elements help to complete the look of the bathroom and make it a functional and enjoyable space.

Changing the plumbing in a unit bathroom in coogee

A lot of people think it is too hard to change the layout of their bathroom but it is actually quite easy. If you are just doing a simple makeover or a remodel then you are probably leaving everything where it is and just changing taps, new paint, new lighting and maybe a new vanity. It is a simple way to freshen up an old bathroom.

Although when you choose to do a unit bathroom renovation in Coogee you are starting with a blank sheet of paper and can then design anything you like. By completely demolishing your old bathroom you can get access to all the plumbing to be able to move pipes, tap locations, drain locations etc.

This means you can completely change the orientation and layout of your bathroom and install a toilet in a different corner of the room, have a larger vanity or even install a bath together with a shower. However, there are several things that you should consider before doing so:

  • Cost: Changing the plumbing in your bathroom can be expensive, particularly if you need to move the location of your fixtures or change the layout of your pipes. You will need to budget accordingly and ensure that you have enough funds to cover the cost of the plumbing changes as well as the other aspects of your renovation. We can provide a quotation that outlines what it might cost and this will depend if the house is built on a concrete slab or timber floor boards as well as how extensive the changes are.

  • Building codes and regulations: It is important to ensure that any changes you make to your bathroom plumbing comply with local building codes and regulations. You may need to obtain permits and have the work inspected by a licensed plumber or building inspector. This is particularly important for bathrooms getting renovated in units or apartments where you have to use existing plumbing that is shared in the building.

  • Access to pipes: Depending on the age and design of your home, accessing the plumbing pipes in your bathroom may require additional work such as cutting through walls or floors. You will need to factor this into your renovation timeline and budget.

  • Plumbing fixtures: If you plan to change the location of your plumbing fixtures such as your toilet, sink, or shower, you will need to ensure that the new locations are feasible and that there is adequate space to install them or more importantly, use them easily in their new placements.

  • Timeline: Changing the plumbing in your bathroom can add time to your renovation project. You will need to factor in the additional time required for plumbing work when planning your renovation timeline.

Small bathroom renovating ideas

Terrazzo style floor tiling

Terrazzo style flooring is a great option for bathroom renovations for several reasons. From a design perspective Terrazzo style tyles are a versatile material that can be customised to match any design scheme. It is available in a wide range of colours and patterns, making it easy to create a unique look for your bathroom.

You can also mix different materials such as glass, marble, or granite chips to create a personalised design. In the case of this bathroom, it becomes the feature of the room with its mix of colours, shapes and patterns on the floor.

Subway wall tiles

In small bathrooms you don’t have a lot of space to make a visual impact, so you need to be clever with your interior design choices. Using subway wall tiles to create a feature wall creates interest in the room without making it feel cluttered. It is a unique look and doesn’t take over the room.

Shallow vanity unit

Small bathrooms in units are normally quite narrow, so it makes sense to think about the depth of your vanity to create more usable space and enough walking room between the vanity, toilet or shower.

Changing bathroom plumbing drainage

When you strip a bathroom back to the wall and floor boards you can then make changes to where the pipes run, this means you can move the installation placement of the newly installed items.

Custom made glass screen divider

A modern bathroom design trend for houses or units is to have a single glass piece that is the shower screen. Commonly used for walk in showers it is a seamless transition from the room into the shower. It is great for adults, kids or even pets to simply walk in or out of the shower.

Renovating a bathroom in Coogee can definitely add value to your home, as long as the renovations are done properly and with the right materials. When considering a bathroom renovation, it’s important to ensure that you have all the necessary elements to make the space functional, including a shower, toilet, vanity and bathtub.

  • A shower is a must-have for most people, as it provides a convenient and efficient way to get clean. Make sure to choose a shower that is large enough for two people and has enough headroom, if needed.
  •  Toilets are also important (no kidding right) and you should consider a model that is efficient, easy to clean and has a low profile to make the most of the space if there isn’t much room. Sometimes a concealed cistern system is a wise choice.
  • Vanity units are essential for storing bathroom essentials and can be used to add extra counter space, too. Choose a vanity that matches the style of the bathroom and has enough storage space.
  • Bathtubs can also add value to your home, especially if you have a larger family or enjoy relaxing in a warm bath. While they can take up a lot of space they are especially suited if the home needs to be used by a family with small children or it is placed in an ensuite to the main bedroom.

When renovating your custom bathroom, it is important to choose high-quality materials that are durable and attractive. This includes tiles, taps, shower heads and other fixtures. We always recommend a fresh coat of paint to give the space a new look and feel.

Additionally, consider incorporating energy-efficient and eco-friendly features into your bathroom renovation, such as low-flow toilets, shower heads and taps which can help reduce water and energy usage. These features not only help the environment, but can also lower your monthly bills.

In terms of cost, bathroom renovations can range from a few thousand dollars for a basic renovation to tens of thousands for a complete overhaul. It is important to have a budget in mind and stick to it, so you don’t overspend. Renovating a bathroom in Sydenham to include a shower, toilet, vanity and bathtub can add value to your home, as long as the renovations are done properly and with the right materials.
