There are thousands of bathroom design ideas with a washing machine that you can find on the internet, we’ve included some photos below of different examples. Planning a bathroom renovation design to include a washing machine makes a lot of sense considering it is a wet room & already has water supply as well as drainage plumbing.

A washing machine can be included in the design of a new bathroom that is going to be renovated by incorporating a space for in in the floor plan layout. A washing machine can easily be placed under the vanity sink bench area, behind a wall niche or within cabinetry that conceals it.

How to install a washing machine in a bathroom

Passion Built is an independent bathroom renovation contractor in Sydney that can help you design a bathroom layout that includes space so you can install a washing machine. To install a washing machine in a bathroom is relatively straight forward because most modern models just need a cold water supply, power and waste drainage to operate. Even if you wanted to wash your clothes with warm water the machine will heat the water internally, so to operate a washing machine installed in your bathroom would require;

  • electrical power point

  • water supply tap

  • available drain outlet

To make it more practical and usable every day you would most likely also consider these elements for a design & installation;

  • A bench top area to place a washing basket

  • Cupboard space to store detergent or fabric softener

  • A cupboard door to conceal or hide the washing machine when its not being used

As you can see in the photos above, there are a few different ways a washing machine can be installed in a bathroom which include;

  • A stacked washer and dryer: This is a space-saving solution, especially for smaller bathrooms. The dryer sits conveniently on top of the washing machine to save floor space. They could be placed behind an entry door so that when you walk in you don’t immediately see them.

  • Built-in cabinetry: You can create a designated laundry area by building cabinets around the washing machine. This helps hide the appliance and keeps your bathroom looking neat. You can then add shelves or drawers for laundry supplies.

  • Under-sink placement: If you have a large bathroom vanity with a spacious cabinet below, you might be able to fit a washing machine underneath the sink. This is a good option for small machines or if you want to try make your bathroom look and feel modern.

  • Niche installation: If your bathroom has an alcove or unused corner, you can create a custom wall niche or nib wall to hide the washing machine behind it. This can maximise space and make the washer look “built-in”

  • Open laundry area: In some layouts, especially larger bathrooms, the washer might be left unconcealed. This can work well if you design the laundry area to complement the overall bathroom aesthetic so that it feels like a single, unified room.

How much does it cost to install a washing machine in a bathroom?

The cost to install a washing machine in a bathroom will vary based on the situation;

  • Adding a washing machine to an existing bathroom;
    • Option 1; You might be able to install a washing machine to an existing bathroom if it is large enough and there is available floor space. A local plumber might be able to add an extra tap in the wall to supply water and you can run the drainage hose into your sink, bath, shower or by pushing into your floor waste. So a simple installation like that might cost around $300 to cover the labour needed.

    • Option 2; If there isn’t any existing floor space then it might be possible to replace a vanity, remove a bath or remove a wall from an adjoining linen cupboard to create the space needed to install a washing machine. This type of minor renovation might cost between $1,000 and $5,000 depending how extensive it is or whether there are any load bearing walls involved.

  • Building a brand new bathroom with washing machine installed; the average cost of getting a bathroom renovated in Sydney starts from $20,000 for a complete renovation where the whole room is demolished back to the bare floors and walls. This gives you the opportunity to design the bathroom to include a washing machine, shower, bath and toilet all in the one room. The layout, plumbing, electrical points, lighting and ventilation can all be designed with the requirement of installing a washing machine in mind.

What is the best layout for a washing machine in a bathroom?

3m x 2.5m bathroom layout ideas for a renovation

There is no such thing as ‘the best layout for a washing machine in a bathroom’, ok wait, we tell a lie. The best layout for a washing machine to be installed in a bathroom is one where you can open the door to the machine, it can be plugged in and water can be connected to it!

Ok jokes aside

The size of your bathroom & what you want to try and install will determine what will be the best layout choice to include a washing machine (as well as a dryer if that was a requirement) So if you have a 3m x 3m bathroom and want to include shower, vanity, bath, toilet, washing machine and dryer then depending on the orientation of the room, location of the entry door, windows and plumbing there could be three, four, five or ten ways to create layouts that can work.

When we are asked to design a bathroom with a washing machine we will use our 3D/2D virtual design software to create different variations and ideas for layouts so that you can choose the one you like best. This is a practical way to make sure there is space to use everything, move around freely and most importantly, it will all fit.

A layout can incorporate a washing machine in different ways with the options including;

Examples of a washing machine installed in a bathroom

The best way to visualise the theory that we have mentioned above is to look at different examples of a washing machine installed in a bathroom. We have built lots of small bathrooms with a washing machine in Sydney as people have wanted to make every available space in their home more practical. Many people then convert their laundry into a second bathroom or to be used as additional storage space. You don’t need combination laundry and washing machine taps as you will see in the examples, the washing machine can have its own water supply taps that are concealed behind the machine or in a cupboard.

Building or designing a new vanity with a washing machine below it is very simple to do as you’ll see in the renovation examples below. It is also very easy to conceal or hide a washing machine behind a wall niche, cupboard door or sliding door so that it isn’t visible when you walk in and out to use the bathroom.

Advantages & disadvantages of putting a washing machine in a bathroom

Installing a washing machine in the bathroom during a renovation can be a space-saving and functional solution, particularly in Sydney where housing tends to be compact;

Pros:

  • Space optimisation: Sydney homes often have limited laundry space. Combining laundry and bathroom functions maximises the use of a single room.

  • Convenience: Having the washer and dryer in the bathroom can streamline laundry workflow, especially if the bathroom is close to bedrooms.

  • Modern aesthetics: With proper planning and design (cabinetry, niches), a washer and dryer can blend seamlessly into a modern bathroom.

Cons:

  • Moisture and ventilation: Bathrooms are inherently humid environments. Extra care needs to be taken during installation to prevent moisture damage to the washer and surrounding areas. Proper ventilation is crucial.

  • Sound: Washing machines can be noisy during operation. Consider noise levels if the bathroom is near bedrooms or living areas.

  • Safety: Electrical safety is paramount in bathrooms due to the presence of water. Ensure proper electrical work is done during installation to avoid potential hazards.

Why are people putting washing machines in their bathroom in Sydney?

  • Limited space: As mentioned earlier, Sydney housing often lacks dedicated laundry rooms. Bathrooms provide a viable alternative.

  • Combined functionality: Renovating a bathroom to include laundry can be more cost-effective than adding a whole new laundry area.

  • Modern design trends: Open floor plans and integrated laundry spaces are becoming increasingly popular, making bathroom laundry placements more appealing.

Installing a washing machine in a bathroom renovation can be a smart renovation solution for Sydney homes considering the space constraints so many houses or apartments have. It is the smartest way to reduce the wasted space in a laundry so you can use that room for something else.
