We renovated this bathroom in a home in Leichhardt with a new walk-shower

Modern bathrooms can be renovated to include modern technology like underfloor heating, heated towel rails and even a smart bidet toilet seat. All of these items can add a level of convenience and luxury to a bathroom that makes it so much more enjoyable to use all year round.

Winter in Sydney can get quite cold and you don’t to use daggy floor mats in your stylish bathroom if you have under floor heating. While using a bidet can help reduce the amount of toilet paper or sanitary wipes are going down the toilet which is great for the environment plus hygienic too.

Lisa wanted all of these additions to her bathroom plus a new walk in shower, new toilet, new vanity & new mirror installed in her home in Leichardt in Sydney.

Linda chose Passion Built to be her bathroom renovation contractor in Leichhardt after getting a few different quotes. We always provide a free,  fixed price bathroom renovation quotation as well as a free site inspection because spending money on renovating is all about knowing the people you are dealing with. It’s also important for us to be able to physically see the site, what access is like and how difficult the renovation job might me.

Should you buy your own products for a bathroom renovation?

Passion Built prides itself on being very flexible when clients work with us as renovation contractors. We give you the choice of supplying your own materials or using our expertise to find the items for you. There are literally millions of choices and if you have the time, patience and energy to hunt around for every item you may be able to save some money.

Sometimes we might be able to get items at wholesale rates but the market is so competitive that there aren’t too many savings to be had. The biggest challenge is buying the right items that are suitable for the renovation.

In this example, Linda had purchased all the products which were fine. Although the toilet she purchased had an in-wall cistern and to accommodate this we had to frame out the wall to create enough depth so it could be installed.

These situations can lead to variations in the contracted scope of work so it is really important to make sure the right items are chosen the first time around. Fortunately in this situation we could work around it.

Floor to tall tiling creates a sense of luxury

This was such a fun bathroom to work on because there were so many unique features like the underfloor heating that had its own digital thermostat, a heated towel rail that was also controlled with the heating so it could operate at certain times and there was the Toto toilet. It is a fully autonomous toilet with bidet functionality, it opens/closes if it senses someone, has air drying features and is a premium choice costing around $6,500.

Other details included;

  • Mitred tile corners in the shower niche
  • Argent tap ware
  • Custom made vanity with Ceasarstone top
  • Concrete tiles from Kalafrana Ceramics
  • LED IXL ceiling fan
  • Wall globe lights
  • Floor to ceiling tiling

Everywhere you look it just feels luxurious, understated and it is a complete transformation compared to the old, boring bathroom. Very tastefully decorated with soft earthy tones in the towels and timber drawers with stylish black taps setting things off nicely.

Renovating tips for old bathrooms

Using technology like temperature controlled heating

There is so much technology available that can be installed in new bathrooms. One of the most popular items we get asked to install is under floor heating and in this bathroom it had a control module that can turn on/off at certain times. It means you can wake up and walk onto nice warm floors in the middle of winter then grab your toasty towel to dry off after a shower.

Use timber in your bathroom

Putting timber in a bathroom can really soften the room and make it feel warmer. Most of the time this can be done with the vanity unit and they are specially treated to minimise mould.

Concealed waste drains

A floor waste can be concealed so that the floor is seamless and the drain isn’t so obvious. Running it full length across the walk-in shower means it can collect more water across the tile surface area as well. It’s also easier to clean by removing the centre piece.

Smart bidet toilets

A lot of people buy the bidet toilet seats that sit on top of your existing toilet. These are ok, but the ideal way is to have a whole toilet suite that has an integrated bidet and is designed for that purpose. The in wall cistern is concealed so that it doesn’t take up much space as well.

Frameless glass shower screens

You can buy cheap shower screens at places like Bunnings, but look how great a custom made frameless shower screen looks. Instead of trying to fit a standard size screen into the room, you can have whatever you like made to size.

So for this bathroom they could have placed the screen on the other side of the window to create a double person shower if they wanted to.

The frameless design is easier to keep clean because there are less surfaces, edges or joins for soap scum, shampoo or other debris to collect.
