Bathroom renovation with layout change to fit a bathtub

For this home in Sydney, the scope of work our renovation team was given was to completely renovate this room and changing the layout of the plumbing to make more space to fit both shower and bath tub.
This ground floor bathroom in Lilyfield originally featured a traditional English-style design, complete with a clawfoot bathtub that had become worn over time. While full of character, the layout and finishes no longer suited the homeowners’ lifestyle or design preferences. They were seeking a more modern and contemporary interior that would enhance the usability and aesthetic appeal of the space.
To achieve this, we reconfigured the floor plan to allow for a more practical and open layout. The toilet was relocated, and the clawfoot bath was replaced with a sleek, back-to-wall bathtub, creating space for a new walk-in shower. This improved both the functionality and visual flow of the room.
Because the property was built on a timber subfloor, rather than a concrete slab, we were able to modify the plumbing and drainage layout efficiently during the demolition phase. This made it easier to implement the new configuration without invasive structural work, while ensuring all installations met current plumbing standards.
A standout feature of this renovation was the client’s unique choice to lay the 600×300 floor tiles in a square herringbone pattern, adding visual interest and a modern twist to the flooring. In the shower recess, we installed 600×1200 tiles to minimise vertical grout lines and create a seamless appearance. Elsewhere in the bathroom, we used 600×600 tiles in the same finish to maintain consistency while enhancing spatial perception.
Additional upgrades included the installation of a custom shadow line cornice for a clean, architectural finish, a heated towel rail controlled by a digital thermostat, and a custom hardwood vanity paired with a matching shaving cabinet. We also installed Caroma tapware, a frameless glass sliding door shower screen, and a built-in wall niche above the bath for added convenience.
This renovation successfully combined modern functionality with custom detailing, resulting in a beautifully refined bathroom that meets the owners’ current needs while adding value to the home.
