I'm happy to have picked Passion Built for my bathroom renovations. I was able to pick all the fitting and tiles and the finished bathroom looks fantastic. Dylan is a pleasure to deal with, always polite and helpful, promptly responding to my queries and happy to accommodate several changes along the way, like changing the sink because I found it too small.

Bathroom renovation in Como

We renovated this small bathroom in como with a new shower, toilet & laundry

This was a straight forward complete bathroom renovation that we completed in Como. The old bathroom looked ok, but felt a bit tired and didn’t match the styling of the rest of the home. The owners wanted to give it a modern look and also include some space to have a combo washing machine and dryer to better utilise the space in their house.

The owners engaged Passion Built as their renovation contractor after getting a few different quotes. We always provide a free,  fixed price bathroom renovation quotation as well as an initial consultation because spending money on renovating is all about knowing the people you are dealing with.

Discovering problems with the structure of a room

Our work began by demolishing the room, removing all the old fixtures, tiling, waterproofing so that it was all stripped back to the timber framework. What we quickly discovered was the room had two different floor levels for some reason.

So we had to allow for extra bedding to make it one uniform level to build on. The other area that wasn’t obvious during the initial inspections was that the timber framed walls were weak. During demolition there was some minor damage to the opposing side, which we repaired immediately.

Fortunately there weren’t any delays & we were able to complete this renovation within 21 days by making sure all the building materials were on site before we commenced works.

Can you include a laundry in a bathroom?

In the old days every house would be built with a kitchen, formal dining room, living area, sunroom & then a separate bathroom or laundry. Every function was separated by walls with at least one window in each one. Fast forward to 2022 and it’s all about open living spaces that blend into each other. For many home owners they don’t want to waste precious space on a dedicated room for their laundry.

So a renovating trend we are seeing more and more of is to have the bathroom and laundry combined. In some situations this means removing the wall between the two rooms and ‘merging’ them so to speak. At other times it might be combining a powder room with a laundry or adding a toilet and shower into a laundry.

Either way it creates a more spacious bathroom for the property.

For this project we had to build a large wall niche they could house the combination washing machine dryer as well as provide some shelf space for a basket, washing powder or for sorting clothes. It was placed in the left corner of the room, so if you looked into the bathroom it wouldn’t be visible unless you entered. The space was left open, but it would have been easy to install a sliding or folding door to keep it out of sight.

The products used in this bathroom included

  • Custom made shaker vanity
  • Caroma urbane rain head
  • Phoenix rhapsody wall lever tap set
  • Caroma urbane back to wall toilet
  • 200×200 Retro White and Taupe Floral Pattern Matt non rectified wall tiles
  • Gloss white ceramic wall tile 100×200
  • Frameless glass shower screen
  • Upgraded IXL tactic heat/fan
  • Custom window louvre

Everything was kept nice and simple. Classic white tiling with silver tapware with a textured pattern floor tile for some visual interest. We also installed a custom made frameless shower screen and floor waste, installed a new toilet, vanity, mirror as well as the electrical items like the ceiling fan.

Renovating tips for old bathrooms

Hide your laundry in the bathroom

A great space saving tip when all you need is a combo washer / dryer and a bit of bench space. Perfectly suited to being in a ‘wet’ room. You could even throw your dirty clothes from the shower straight into the machine.

Textured tiling

The tiles used on the floor and main wall of this bathroom have a textured Moroccan look pattern which adds interest to the room. The soft grey works well with the white palette.

Frameless glass shower screens

You can buy cheap shower screens at places like Bunnings, but look how great a custom made frameless shower screen looks. Instead of trying to fit a standard size screen into the room, you can have whatever you like made to size.

So for this bathroom they could have placed the screen on the other side of the window to create a double person shower if they wanted to.

The frameless design is easier to keep clean because there are less surfaces, edges or joins for soap scum, shampoo or other debris to collect.
